Due to the excess of free carbon dioxide, iron in artesian waters is usually present in the form of FeCO3, which cannot be removed from the water by filtration. Birm acts as a catalyst, accelerating the oxidation of ferrous iron to the ferric state by oxygen dissolved in water. As a result of subsequent hydrolysis, an insoluble precipitate of Fe(OH)3 is formed, which is removed from the water by filtration. The sludge filtered in the operating mode is removed from the load during loosening.
When using Birm for iron removal, it is necessary that the treated water does not contain oil products and hydrogen sulfide, the content of organic substances does not exceed 4–5 mg/l, the content of dissolved oxygen is not less than 15% of the iron content, and the pH value is 6.8. Chlorination of source water significantly reduces the activity of Birm. Birm can also be used to remove manganese from water. However, in this case, the pH level of the treated water should be 8.0–9.0. If iron is present in the water along with manganese, then the pH level should be below 8.5. A high pH can cause the formation of colloidal iron which is difficult to filter out.
